With the growth of our Umpire numbers from 409 last year to 563 for the 2023 season, AFL South East have furthered our commitment to Umpiring in the region by investing in a full-time resource.

Following a thorough appointment process, we are pleased to announce Dean Armstrong as the AFL South East Umpire Operations Coordinator, beginning on Tuesday 6th June.

While the role will report to the Senior Football & Region Umpire Manager, we are identifying strategies for this role and our Umpiring Department to grow even larger in the coming months.

Dean joins AFL South East with experience in retail management with Pet Barn & Aldi, also has vast exposure to umpiring.

Beginning his career as an Umpire in the MPFNL, he has been a Field Umpire for 15+ years which has included Grand Finals at various levels. He also has a strong knowledge of the Southern Umpires Association having been a member previously, and his father Dale a Life Member of the organisation.

Dean’s most recent role in Umpiring was being appointed as the SEQ Senior Field Coach and Precinct Lead for AFL Queensland.

“After a thorough process, we are excited to welcome Dean to the AFL South East staff to provide an enthusiastic and vibrant asset to Umpiring. With the growth we have seen, this additional resource will add to our strategic vision as part of our department” – Haydn O’Connor, Senior Football & Region Umpire Manager.

Returning to Melbourne, Dean is excited to be back home to attend the G as a one-eyed Tigers supporter. He also enjoys the NBA (Miami Heat), Soccer (Fulham) and spending time with his rescue dog Dusty.

We look forward to welcoming Dean back to the AFL South East community and the impact he will have to Umpiring in the region.
